Mary Lou Retton's iconic smile often masked a career and life marked by significant physical challenges and extraordinary comebacks. Her path to Olympic glory was nearly derailed just weeks before the 1984 Games when she suffered a severe knee injury requiring arthroscopic surgery. Doctors were skeptical about her ability to recover in time, but Retton's determination saw her not only compete but win gold, a testament to her incredible resilience even as a teenager.

Throughout her life, Retton has grappled with hip dysplasia, a condition where the hip socket doesn't fully cover the ball portion of the upper thighbone. This congenital issue, combined with the immense stress of an estimated 150,000 vaults during her career, led to chronic pain and eventually, the necessity of multiple hip replacement surgeries. She has reportedly undergone over 30 orthopedic operations in her lifetime, including procedures on her shoulders and neck. "Give me a hip to rehab, give me a shoulder," she has said, highlighting her familiarity with orthopedic recovery.

Each surgery and rehabilitation period demanded immense physical and mental fortitude, showcasing her unwavering spirit to return to an active life.

In October 2023, Retton faced her most daunting health battle yet when she was hospitalized with a rare and life-threatening form of pneumonia. She spent about a month in the ICU, at times "fighting for her life" and unable to breathe on her own. Her daughters shared that there were moments they were told to say their goodbyes.

The recovery has been arduous. Months later, she still required daily oxygen due to scarred lungs. "My lungs are pretty scarred up and they're gonna stay that way forever," she shared in an interview, adding that the experience "really changed me (mentally)." However, true to her fighting spirit, Retton has focused on her recovery, expressing gratitude for the support she received and her determination to move forward. "I have a lot to look forward to, and I know that," she affirmed.

Mary Lou Retton's journey through these profound health hurdles underscores her remarkable capacity for resilience and comeback, inspiring many with her refusal to be defined by her physical ailments.
